Cycling Tour to Terndrup

Terndrup to and fro by bike

It is suitable to start this ride at the inn Terndrup Kro. It has royal privilege and a long story behind it. On April 1st 1986 the inn burned down, but it was build up again and today it looks as always.

We go on Bælumvej and Krogsholmvej until we arrive at Tvoruphøjvej where we turn left and shortly after right on Svanfolkvej. On our left is Vorgaard which can be traced back to about 1450. In the end of the 1980ies, the main building was, because of decay, torn down. Part of the cellar was preserved. Around 1990 Vorgaard was build up again and now it stands as originally made.

From Vorgaard our trip leads towards the little village Svanfolk, which has got only a few houses and farms. Just before Svanfolk we must turn right on Bjerregårdsvej. But if you wish and you have got the time, you can make a little detour by going into the village of Svanfolk, turn left on Svanholmsmindevej and see the thatched half-timbered farm “Svanholmsminde”.

After perhaps having seen Svanholmsminde, we go back on Bjerregårdsvej. Shortly after you arrive at one of the most beautiful spots in the municipality of Rebild. It is the beautiful hills Svanfolk Bakker, which lead towards Haslevgård stream valley.

When we can break away from the beautiful nature, we continue until we arrive at the manor Randrup which is situated on our left hand. Randrup is mentioned back to the 14th century. The real residence is situated behind the main building with its round tower and the two special bays. It is called “the Italian Wing”, and it was built in 1840. In 1976 it burned down, but was rebuilt in its original state.

From Randrup we continue to Kongerslev, which is one of the few villages, where there is still a horse market (in August). Kongerslev is also known because of its sphagnum, and if you want to, you can go about 10 km to the moor Lille Vildmose and see, how everything is going on in the old-fashioned way with tipper wagons and small locomotives. In one year about 250.000 m3 are being produced, if the weather is good.

If you choose not to go to Lille Vildmose, you go from Kongerslev towards Bælum. Just outside Kongerslev you can turn left on Kongstedlundvej.
The manor Kongstedlund is situated here, well hidden. It is really well kept on the outside, but stands completely empty and you can see it only at a distance.

South of Kongstedlund Smidie is situated on a little hill. In Smidie chalk has been mined, and towards the moor you can see a gallery into the chalk. A thick iron door blocks the entrance, because the bats need their peace and quietness. This is one of the very best places for bats, and there are many of them – around 1500 – and after the iron door has been put up, their number increases all the time.

We go on to another manor by the name of Dragsgård, while we enjoy the beautiful view and perhaps a lunch pack. Dragsgård is beautifully situated between hills and the big garden leads directly into the wood. The main building was restored in 1940 and in 1950 the farm was renovated.

Continue to Bælum to which in 1900 the railway between Hadsund and Aalborg came. After this the village grew. The village has a great wood, in which there is a big and beautiful source and a fine mill from which there is a magnificent view.

In 1875 Bælum-Solbjerg municipality bought the mill, though the present mill is of a more recent date as the old thatched mill was destroyed in a fire shortly after the turn of the century and a new one was built at the site. The present mill in Bælum is about 80 years old. (The mill is open from June to September, Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Now we go back on Tvoruphøjvej to Terndrup, but just before arriving in Terndrup you can on your right hand see a group of scattered beeches. You can imagine the Danish landscape like this before you started to put up fences around fields and woods. It is a little pearl which you do not find very often and which ought to be preserved.

At this spot we will end our cycling tour as we hope it has been a pleasant trip.

Another tour can be recommended. It runs south to for instance to Korup -GI. Wiffertsholm - Solbjerg - Fredenslund - Terndrup Lund.
