On this cosy bicycle ride we set out from the red church in Terndrup on the road Skørpingvej just opposite the town hall. The church in Terndrup is rather new, as it was built in 1910. From the church you ride along Skørpingvej towards Aalborgvej and then downhill, until you arrive at Mølledammen (the millpond)
At this millpond in Terndrup you can see the only fishing stair in Denmark with round basins. It is worth seeing and is also the landmark of the village.
By the millpond is also a monument in memory of emancipation of serfs in 1788, whereupon is written an old Danish inscription:
At løst er Bondens Trællebånd, kan sten dog ikke vise, men Skaldesang med liv og Aand, som Bondeløber prise.
It means that a rock can not show that the peasant’s yoke of bondage is untied but the songs of the bards praise him.
At the bottom of the rock is written: ”The Company “Paulunet” sat up this memorial on June 20th 1888”.
In 1988, to mark the 200 years of emancipation of serfs, a new memorial was set up by the Guild in Terndrup. The opinions of the memorial differed, and they are still talking about it in the village.
From the millpond you go along into the town and here you arrive at the court building at your left.
The court building is dated from 1888 but today it functions as a registry of the court. From time to time there are still court meetings in the old building. Originally, there also were a jail and a police office in the building.
1901 a new hospital was build in Terndrup, it was at the time the largest working place of the municipality. Some years ago the new part of the hospital was made a rehabilitation centre. In the old part a fitness centre was set up as well as meeting rooms for different purposes.
Now you go on out of the village on the road towards Hadsund, after a while you turn left on the road “Vester Korupvej”, and shortly after you might be lucky to see a deer on your left.
Further down the road you arrive at Korup, the most southern village of the municipality. In the middle of Korup you turn left towards Solberg. Further on your left is the manor Gl. Wiffertsholm with its long avenue. Gl. Wiffertsholm is situated in the hilly and wooded area Østhimmerland. It is a manor which can trace its history back to the late part of the 16th century.
There is a funny story concerning one of Wiffertsholm’s former owners by the name of Testrup. One day in 1740 Testrup went for a long trip; the target was the manor Wiffertsholm, which was up for an auction. Although Testrup was a sheriff, he always dressed as a peasant and he spoke a dialect. Testrup even had the audacity to make an offer at the auction.
He was expelled by the auction holder because they were sure that he could not find security, but he protested and said: “I do not think, the security is needed as I want to pay in cash!” Then he shouted out the window asking his servant to bring “the little red box”, whereupon he paid in cash. Testrup had made a fortune by trading and shipping and by renting farms. - And “the little red box”? Well, it is still at Wiffertsholm!
From Wiffertsholm a pretty, winding road leads through the forest “Wiffertsholm Hovskov” and the area Graverhusene to the main road towards Øster Hurup.
Here you pass the old station from the time where the train on this section was called “Hadsund-Peter. Now the building is a private residence and the old railway trail has been made a beautiful nature trail for walking and cycling.
Turn left towards Solbjerg on the bicycle path. If you like to have a longer trip (about 8 km) and to see the property Ravenborg, you can continue by the road Hurupvej where Ravenborg is situated in a beautiful area on the edge of the forest. Deep in the forests of Ravenborg, in the part called “Sønderskoven”, you can find big old castle mounds called “Gaardsens Vold”.
Passing through the forest on the bicycle paths you have a fine view over the fields and you have got a possibility to have lunch at the tables, set up for the purpose. Continue to Solbjerg, where you also pass the manor “Fredenslund”. On the church hill there is a magnificent view over the moor to Kattegat and the hills “Muldbjergene” by Dokkedal.
The area around the villages Korup and Solbjerg was before called the “Cherry Area”. When Testrup bought Wiffertsholm in 1741, he made a paragraph in all contracts that the peasants each year had to plant a certain number of fruit trees with the purpose that it might increase their income. The idea was good and as time went by you saw one orchard after the other shoot up in the area. From this the name “Cherry Area”.
On your way back towards Terndrup, you continue by Fruerhusvej. At the end of the road you arrive at Bælumvej, here you turn left towards Terndrup. Just before arriving at the town sign you can make a little side trip to Terndruplund. Here you can see the old pavilion, which today is a resort for scouts and every year the celebration of Constitution Day takes place here.
The celebration of Constitution Day in Terndruplund is deeply rooted. Nowhere else in the country you have celebrated the Constitution every year since 1953. Over the years many politicians have stood on the beautiful rostrum in the shadow of the beeches. In the inn Terndrup Kro there are autographs from many of the speakers as well as photos and humorous comments.
By the way, in the same inn a handyman worked, who made many witty remarks. Once the owner and his wife were away for a few days and Ejnar served the tables. A doctor and his family from Copenhagen had made their choice from the menu. Ejnar received the order as he was scratching himself behind. The doctor asked professionally interested: ”Do you have haemorrhoids? Ejnar replied:” If it is on the menu, then we have got it!”
From the inn you go to “Mølledammen” and here it is suitable to end this ride by enjoying the view over the pond.
