Thingbæk limestone mines - Thingbæk Kalkminer

BUNDGÅRDS MUSEUM, an underground sculpture museum

“Thingbæk limestone mines” is one of Denmarks most curious museums. It is situated close to Lindenborg Stream valley and has a view over Rold Forest and Rebild Hills.

Throughout generations lime has been mined here at the old Thingbæk Mill Farm. Through the years 1926 – 1956 the mining of the lime was regular mining which never became really profitable.

The owner, the sculptor Anders Bundgård (1864-1937) got the idea to make the mine a sculpture museum. The essence of the exhibitions was Anders Bundgårds own works, among them the plaster models for the Cimbrian Bull in Aalborg and the Monument for Reunion in Randers.

In a special cave Anders Bundgård has created the ”Emigration Cave” which in reliefs tells about the emigration to the USA. 1969 the municipality of Aalborg let the plaster models made by the sculptor C. J. Bonnesen to Thingbæk limestone mines where they now are a part of the collection.

The mine is also a habitat for bats. There are 5 different species. During the winter when they hibernate you can see them hide in cracks and chinks in the limestone.

During the year there are koncerts, art exhibitions and candle lights in the mine.

Entrance fees:
Adults DKK 40,- (50 when there are candles in the mine)
Children (6-12 years) DKK 10,- (15 when there are candles in the mine)
Groups with more than 20 persons DKK 30 per person.
