The Lakes in Rebild

Have a unique nature experience at one of the beautiful lakes in the area.

Store Økssø The lake Store Økssø is beautifully situated in Rold Skov, surrounded by the trees of the forest. The lake is near by Mosskov Pavillonen which is a small, old restaurant, a very popular resort for the whole family.

Store ØkssøYou may swim in the lake and even if the water is brown it is excellent bathing water. The brown colour is due to the high content of humus in the water, water from the surrounding moors as well as the admission of leaves from the forest. Put on your walking shoes – it lasts abour an hour to walk around the lake – and enjoy the landscape and the magnificent wooden sculptures which are placed here and there along the path.

Visit the lake Madum Sø and look for the old baronial castle Madum Søwhich according to an old legend is hidden in the lake: This legend tells us, that once there was an old baronial castle in the middle of the lake. The owner was well-known for his unrestrained way of living and while his wife was dying, there was a big drinking bout in the castle. The vicar from Astrup was called for and he arrived in in vestments to give the lady the Holy Communion. As he bends down over the lady, he discovered to his horror that a disguised pig was in the bed instead. Furiously he left the castle, where after it sank into the lake and disappeared. It is said that when the sun is shining, you can see the 3 chimneys of the castle as 3 white dots at the bottom of the lake. ....

Mastrup SøerneThe Mastrup lakes in Støvring are another choice of a beautiful nature experience. The four lakes are the centre of a green resort which invites you to visit! Bring your picnic basket and enjoy it in the fine landscape.

The lake Bælum Kildesø is in the forest south west of Bælum.Bælum Kildesø
Here there is a magnificent view and as there are benches as well it is the perfect place to have a picnic. Once the lake was an open place where the fist of May was celebrated but as time went by the spring of the holy Sct. Luris won and the place was flooded and became a shallow rectangular lake. A bridge leads over the spring in the end of the lake.

The lake has got a couple of ducks as well as lots of fishes and insects, so this place is fine for a trip with fishing net and rubber boots. During the winter the lake will quickly be totally frozen, so it is a very popular and safe ice rink.

Other lakes in the area:

Lille Økssø
The lake is situated about a kilometre south of Store Økssø. Lille Økssø is a tiny lake which originally was bigger but by now it is overgrown. The lake has just like Store Økssø brownish water and is sour, a dystrophic lake.

It is surrounded by bog, making it very difficult to approach. The flora is first of all bog moss, but you also find cotton grass, sun dew, mud sedge and Rannoch rush. The fauna is rather poor as it is normally the case in bogs.

On the south-eastern side of the lake is a bird tower from which you have a fine view over the entire bog area.

Mossø
MossøMossø is north east of the parking place at Mosskov and it is a small forest lake covering 5 hectares. The water is acid and brownish. In the lake you may find lobelia and around it are the three species: heather, bog-rosemary and cross-leaved heath. Apart from that there are blue berry, bunch berry, bog bilberry and sun dew.

Around the lake leads a path.

Ilsø
The little lake is in a meadow area south of the forest Jægersborg. The lake is more nutritious than the previous mentioned and is mainly of eutrophic character. In the lake occurs yellow water lily and water lily in large numbers. The reed swamp is rich in species. On the bank you find yellow rock foil and in the surroundings spots of Turk's cap lily.

Farsø Mose
Shallow bog lake in the southern part of the forest. Located approx. 3 kilometres of Store Økssø.

Hvass Sø
Hvass SøLocated south of Store Økssø, approx. midway between the parking place at Mosskov and Arden. It is a tiny, oblong lake, artificially established in 1959 by construction of a small dam. The lake is named after the late Resident Forest Supervisor, Jens Hvass.

In the immediate surroundings of the lake are planted 25 species of coniferous trees.

Teglsø
Located in the western part of the forest. Main attraction is the impressive juniper berry stands surrounding the lake. There are routes near the lake where you may go, but it is a private forest and the lake belongs to Lindenborg Forest.

Estrup DamEstrup Dam
Small lake located west of Skørping. Former peat-digging spot, but now a very fine little forest lake.

Vintønden (The Wine Barrel)
Peat bog west of the railway by Hellum Tved – a few kilometres south of Skørping.

Bregne SøBregnesøen
A pretty little forest lake, overgrown with a large number of large white water lilies, located west of the railway just opposite Den Jyske Skovhave.

Kæruld i moserneIn all the boggy areas around the lakes it is the cotton grass which in the early summer spreads with it's white dots over the bogs.
